The invention relates to the field of non-destructive testing of materials and manufactured products. The proposed method consists of magnetising, in a coil 3, the part to be checked during its movement, in transforming into an electrical signal (sensor 5) the variation in induction due to the passage of this part through a zone of the magnetic field, in then transforming into an electrical signal the variation of induction due to the passage of the part through a zone located, in the direction of its movement, beyond the magnetic field (sensor 6), in isolating from each of the signals thus obtained the unipolar pulses (circuits 11, 12), in integrating (circuit 13) each of these pulses and in determining the mechanical characteristics of the part according to the results of the integration. The invention is particularly advantageous for use in testing the hardness of oblong parts made of medium carbon steels. <IMAGE>
