Display apparatus

A display apparatus has three display fields, of which the one displays the type of an input variable, the second displays the value of the input variable and the third displays the measurement unit of the input variable. The signal of the input variable is supplied via a plug connection which consists on the one hand of a plug and on the other hand of a socket which is arranged on the display apparatus. Some of the pins in the plug are used for transmitting the signal of the input variable, while further pins are connected to a live pin such that a coding is produced which corresponds to the type of input variable to be displayed. When the plug is inserted into the socket, the coding of the plug is detected by a processor unit of the display apparatus, which results in the legend on the type of input variable displayed and its dimensional unit being displayed automatically. The coding also results in the processor unit processing the supplied input variable in a manner which is matched to the type of input variable displayed.
