The invention relates to a process for the preparation of long-chain N-alkanesulphonic acids from acrylamides and methacrylamides and their salts by reacting acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile with a long-chain olefin and oleum, if appropriate followed by the reaction with a base which provides the cation of the salt, the reaction being carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of an organic SO3-complexant.
