In a method and system for returning shopping trolleys, luggage trolleys and the like from a traffic surface to a storage point, which, according to specifications, are each used individually on the traffic surface and when not in use can be placed together in a space-saving stacked position to form a battery at the storage point, a motor-driven, track-controlled automatic return system is vertically adjustably arranged on the shopping trolley or the like, which automatic system can be moved between a raised out-of-use position and a lowered operating position in which a drive wheel of the automatic return system engages with the traffic surface. The track control takes place by means of current conducting rails or guide rails which are integrated in the traffic surface and are laid to the storage point. As a result, with the automatic return system raised shopping trolleys can be used in a customer-friendly manner, in a manner known per se. If the shopping or the like is loaded, the shopping trolley is pushed to the next guide rail where the automatic return system is lowered onto the guide rail by an operating device, as a result of which the track guidance and the current supply are simultaneously assumed. The automatic return system which engages in the guide rail ensures that the shopping trolley is automatically returned to the storage point.
