An integral helmet is described, whose neck opening can be enlarged, after releasing a safety closure device, by swivelling a lower portion of the helmet away about a hinge located essentially in the helmet shell. The chin strap of the integral helmet is of integral construction with the helmet shell and is rigidly connected thereto. A side flap, which forms the swivellable helmet portion and extends from the neck opening up to the level of the hearing passage, is provided on each side of the integral helmet behind the transition region between the chin strap and the helmet shell for enlarging the neck opening. The integral helmet is distinguished by a particularly good dimensional stability and impact resistance and also by the fact that it can be removed from the driver's head comfortably when the side flaps have been swivelled away.
