Crash or protective helmets, in particular for motor cyclists, having an outer rigid shell and in the interior a padding which is adapted to the shape of the head of the wearer, is recessed in the region of the ears and is provided with a ventilation device, are intended with the least possible constructional outlay and simultaneous draught-free and noise-free inner ventilation to allow the wearer to perceive outside noises, traffic noises, signals or the like without the streamlining of the helmet or its strength being impaired and without undesirable wind noises occurring so that the safety of the helmet-wearer in traffic is increased. This is achieved in this case in that a sound-transmission zone is provided in the outer shell in the region of the ears or in the region of the padding recess.
