PURPOSE:To reduce the length of a bar left behind inside a spindle as well as to economize in the consumption of bars, by performing a bar feed into the spindle by a bar feeder so as to cause the tip of a bar to hit a stopper inside the spindle. CONSTITUTION:With a bar feeder 30, the feed of a workpiece 34 into the inside of a chuck of a spindle 12 takes place. At this time, after the endmost tip of the workpiece 34 hits a stopper inside the chuck, a headstock 14 and the bar feeder 30 are synchronously set in motion and the headstock 14 retreats as far as a fixed stroke. Next, at a set position the workpiece 34 is cut in a cutting- off way by a cutting tool. Therefore, a residual quantity of consumption in the bar work is confined to a feed limit residual quantity of the bar feeder at the most. |
