PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive oxygen-reducing catalyst excellent in reservability, by decomposing the mixed aqueous solution of a metallic manganese salt and a water-soluble metal-chelating compound with heat, and then dehydrating and heat treating the decomposition product. CONSTITUTION:Water-soluble cobalt phthalocyanine sulfonate is dissolved in an aqueous solution of manganese sulfate. Thereafter, the mixed aqueous solution is decomposed with heat at a temp. below 250 deg.C which is the decomposition point of a metal-chelating compound. The resulting product is mixed with activated carbon and fluororesin for providing an electrode with water repellency to form a catalytic material. Said catalytic material is applied onto a current collector body comprising a nickel net to constitute an oxygen-reducing electrode. As a metal at the central part of said metal-chelating compound, iron, nickel, manganese, etc. may be used. |
