<p>The crankshaft (7) of a reciprocating piston air compressor assembly for charging the reservoirs of a vehicle air brake system is driven by an internal combustion engine through an epicyclic gear mechanism (23, 20, 12, 10) having a hand brake (22) which is normally spring applied to lock an intermediate gear (23) of the mechanism to cause driving of the crankshaft (7) by the input shaft (21) and having pneumatically operable means (58) for releasing the band brake (22) upon attainment of a desired charged pressure value of the reservoir.</p> |
