[Also in Divisions E2 and F1] A vehicle anti-theft device for locking the steering column (or gear lever) and controlling an ignition, and a starting, electric circuit, comprises a spring-loaded bolt 7 slidably extendable by an eccentric member 6 acted on by a key-operated lock 3 to a position in which the bolt 7 (or a catch 10 thereon) engages directly in the steering column B (or in a sleeve M thereon), and a sleeve 2 manually rotatable by its shoulder 2a upon a metal body 1 fixed to a support S, so as to make or break the ignition and starting circuits, wherein the bolt 7 cannot be moved to lock the steering while the ignition circuit is made, and the sleeve 2 cannot be rotated to make the ignition circuit while the bolt 7 locks the steering. The sleeve 2 is operated at 2d for the bolt 7, and at 2c for the tongue 7c of the bolt 7. A conductive switch plate 19 is received at 2g in the sleeve 2, and has projections resiliently locating in apertures 2h so that terminals 19b, (19c), (19d) on the plate are urged towards contacts (14a), 15a, (16a), connected into the ignition and starting circuits. The terminals 19b, (19c) are circumferentially elongated. When the bolt 7 locks the steering and ball 22 engages the notch 2k in the sleeve 2, the contacts 15a &c. do not engage the terminals 19b &c. Partial rotation of the key 4 retracts the bolt 7 from the steering column but rotation of the sleeve 2 is prevented and the key 4 is withdrawable. Further rotation of the key 4 further retracts the bolt 7 so that the sleeve 2 can be rotated until the ball 22 . engages a notch 2m in the sleeve 2 whereupon the terminals 19b, (19c) engage the contacts (16a), 15a to complete the ignition circuit. Further rotation of the sleeve 2 against a spring 21 causes the starting terminal (19d) to engage the contact (14a) to complete the starting circuit, the terminals 196, (19c) still engaging the contacts (16a), 15a. |
