Ethylene is homo- or co-polymerized with up to 10% of a C3_10 alpha-olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a compound of the formula where each R is selected from certain hydrocarbyl groups, and each X is selected from certain hydrocarbyl groups and halogen (Cl, Br, or I), at least one X being halogen, and (B) a vanadium or titanium compound containing halogen, including reaction products thereof with organic aluminium or silicon compounds or with silicon compounds and AlCl 3 , AlBr 3 or FeCl 3 . The preparation of the R 2 SiHOAlX 2 compounds is described by (a) reacting (CH 3 ) 2 HSiOSiH(CH 3 ) 2 and (CH 3 ) 2 AlCl to give (CH 3 ) 2 HSiOMCl(CH 3 ), and (b) reacting [(CH 3 ). HSiO] 4 and (CH 3 ) 2 AlCl or (CH 3 )AlCl 2 to give (CH 3 ) 2 HSiOAlCl(CH 3 ) or (CH 3 ) 2 HSiOMCl 2 . In examples, ethylene is homo- or co-polymerized with propylene, butene-1, 3-methyl-butene-1, pentene-1, 4-methyl-pentane-1, hexene-1, heptene-1, octene-1, or decene - 1, in the presence of and various other such compounds containing one halogen and one hydrocarbyl group attached to the aluminium, and (B) TiCI 4 , TiCI 2 (0C 4 H 9 ) 2 , AlCl 3 -trimethylsilyl end blocked methyl hydropolysiloxane-TiCI 4 , beta-TiCl 3 , VCl 4 , and various titanium and vanadium compounds containing both halogen and hydrocarbyloxy groups.
