1,148,663. Grippers for lifting nuclear fuel elements. ATOMENERGI A.B. 20 May, 1966 [24 May, 1965], No. 22630/66. Heading B8H. To raise a fuel element 6 from a channel a gripper is lowered by a wire 21 and as it moves downwards a spring-loaded lever 4 is rotated by a shoulder 7b so that a projection 19 is withdrawn from an annular groove 28 in an inner member 2. This frees the inner member 2 with respect to an outer member 1 so that when the outer member has been lowered to its furthest extent the inner member 2 may be lowered and raised again. A pin 15 co-operating with a slot 22 in the inner member rotates the latter through 60 degrees. As a result of this rotation shoulders 8 push three hooked jaws 3 into engagement with hooks 9 on the fuel element. The element may now be lifted and as a roller 18 moves over the shoulder 7b the projection 19 re-enters the groove 28 and locks the inner and outer members together thereby locking the jaws 3 in their operative position. When the element is set down reciprocation of the inner member 2 again causes rotation through 60 degrees to bring shoulders 12 into engagement with the upper ends of the jaws 3 to hold them in their inoperative position. A ratchet and pawl mechanism 26, 27 ensures that the inner member always rotates in the same direction. |
