NEW MATERIAL:An ester-azoxy compound shown by the formula I (R and R' are 1-8C straight-chain alkyl). EXAMPLE:p-(Trans-4-pentylcyclohexylcarbonyloxy)-p'-pentylazoxy-benzene. USE:A liquid crystal composition for liquid crystal display element. A liquid crystal temperature range is widened by addition of a compound shown by the formula I , and a transparent point is especially raised. PROCESS:A p-alkylaniline shown by the formula II is made into its hydrochloride, diazotized with an equivalent sodium nitrite to give a diazonium salt shown by the formula III. This diazonium salt is coupled with a phenol to give a compound shown by the formula IV. A carboxylic acid shown by the formula Vis reacted with thionyl chloride to give an acid chloride, the compound shown by the formula VI is esterified with the acid chloride to give a compound shown by the formula VI, which is oxidized with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide to give an ester-azoxy compound shown by the formula I .
