The non-straight seam between two parts, one of which has a surface parallel to the seam, is welded by engaging the surface with a guide roller having a fixed axis, positioning an arc or beam welding device adjustable transversely and parallel to the axis to align the beam or arc with the seam adjacent the roller and moving the parts past the welding device while maintaining the surface in contact with the roller. An electron beam welding device 14 is adjustably mounted in an enclosure 16 in which any desired atmosphere or pressure may be maintained. A non-circular cylinder 22 to which a flange 37 is to be welded is rotated by a motor 32. The flange 37 is guided by three guide rollers, two having fixed axes and one 26 being mounted on a spring loaded pivoted arm. The welding device 14 is is located adjacent a guide roller 25 having a fixed axis. In a modification the guide roller 25 is driven and rotates the parts being welded. |
