PURPOSE:To obtain a picture display element which is excellent in driving property, picture quality, durability, etc. by combining a liquid layer consisting of a light transmittable liquid and a heating element, and utilizing an optical physical property variation of the liquid layer generated by heating imagewise the heating element. CONSTITUTION:A display element DE is formed by laminating a heating element 1, a liquid layer 2 (a layer of water or an organic solvent whose thickness is about 1mu-1mm.) and a transparent protective plate 3, on a substrate 5 (for instance, a glass plate or a plastic plate having pressure resistance and a light transmittable property). Said element displays a picture by heating the liquid layer 2 by a heating part 1a of the heating element 1 heated imagewise and modulating incident light 4 by a variation of optical physical properties (a variation of a refractive index, polarizability, etc.) generated in a liquid layer heating part 13 (it is desirable to provide a lattice 7 which shields the incident light 4 at the usual time, and transmits it when the liquid layer heating part corresponding to the picture part is formed). In this regard, said element DE can be constituted as a reflection type, as well. |
