A lapping or honing device comprises at least one resilient ring with an abrasive coated surface, and a plurality of radially-movable thrust members on which the ring is fitted when under tension. The device is in the form of a sleeve 1 which is secured to the spindle 2 of a grinding- machine by a nut 3, projections 1a in the end of the sleeve engaging recesses in the spindle for transmitting rotation to the device. A rod 4 is slidably movable by means of an actuator 25 in the sleeve and is formed with a pair of expander cones 4a, 4b, and cruciform bearing surfaces 4c, 4d for guiding the rod. Adjacent each cone in the sleeve are a plurality of radial passages 6 containing the radially-movable thrust members 5 which engage the inner surfaces of a pair of split rings 7a, 7b having diamond agglomerate on their outer surfaces. A seal 12 is disposed between the ends of each ring. Each thrust member is formed with a longitudinal slot 13 housing a flat spring 14 returned by a pin 15 and engaging centring rollers 16 disposed at the ends of the thrust members. In operation, the device is inserted into a bore to be honed and the rod 4 moved so that the thrust members expand the rings to abrade the surface of the bore. When the rod is retracted, the rings restore the thrust members to their original position. The diameters of the rings can be varied by changing the sets of rollers 16 so that there are large rollers at one end of the thrust members and small rollers at the other end to effect axial adjustment of the thrust members relative to the sleeve 1 and rod 4. A liquid supply system 22 can be connected to a rotary seal 21a, the liquid passing along the cruciform bearing portions 4c, 4d to orifices 23 in the surfaces of the rings. |
