[Also in Divisions G2, H1 and H4] A device for forming an electrostatic charge image on a recording material uses a beam of electrons produced in a cathode-ray tube having a thin window through which the beam penetrates to emerge into a region containing a gas and a strong electric field wherein the beam is amplified by a Townsend discharge before it falls on to the recording material. The electron beam may be modulated in the usual way according to a signal, in, for example, a facsimile receiver. As shown in Fig. 6, a voltage is applied between the window 12, preferably of aluminium oxide with a conductive coating and possibly supported by a grid-like structure, and a conductive plate 8<SP>1</SP> behind the recording material 9<SP>1</SP>. The recording material 9<SP>1</SP> may be a simple insulating material or a thermoplastic resin, for example, and may conveniently be formed on the surface of a drum and the image developed and transferred by known methods, but preferably the recording material is semiconductive when heated or photo-conductive, so that internal charges formed may be dissipated after image transfer. |
