[Also in Division F1] An electro-chemical machining head comprises a tool carrying rod c fixed to a piston b slidable in a cylinder a by liquid pumped past a non-return valve w into cylinder space m, the liquid in the cylinder space j on the other side of the piston being expelled to a variable volume chamber k having a spring-loaded wall l. The variable volume chamber shown is annular and surrounds the cylinder u but it may be a separate accumulator chamber connected by a pipe to the space j, Figs. 2 & 3 (not shown). To move the piston b in steps a pump, Fig. 4, is used to supply the space m. The pump comprises a plunger 3 having a hammer face 11 which is hit by a hammer 12, 13 propelled by a solenoid 2. The solenoid is operated at intervals as determined by a timing device 10. |
