A W-In-Cu composite suitable for use as an electrical contact in a vacuum switching device is made by vacuum infiltrating, with Cu, either a green or presintered W-In compact containing 0À5-5% In. The W and In powder, 1-10 microns size is mixed and compacted at 20-35 t.s.i. and optionally presintered at 1250‹C. in hydrogen. Vacuum infiltration with Cu is effected at 1250‹- 1450‹C. at 10<SP>-5</SP> torr. In an alternative embodiment the W powder particles may be coated with the In either by electro-plating or vapour phase plating. |
