The invention serves for comminuting material to be ground and has a fixed roller, arranged fixed to the machine, and an adjustable loose roller. The two rollers bound a roller gap which can be adjusted with an adjustment device. The adjustment device is combined with an overload preventing device, by means of which the loose roller can be removed counter to a counterforce from the fixed roller, to form one component. Said component is connected in terms of drive to a carriage in which the loose roller is mounted. The loose roller can be accurately adjusted with respect to the fixed roller using the carriage. The fixed roller is mounted in a non-displaceable fashion so that bearings of simple construction can be used for it.
