The invention presented here of a device for the agitation and pumping of liquids in an open and closed chamber is based on the principle of transmitting the mechanical energy necessary for the agitation or pumping process through a diaphragm. This method has the advantage that the actual working chamber is free of mechanical elements of any type and can be fully encapsulated. Shaft through-leads and shaft seals or the like can also be dispensed with and the working chamber can to a great extent be designed freely so that, for example, no dead spaces of any kind are produced. Since the energy introduced into the working chamber is rotation energy, an hermetically sealed centrifugal pump in which the working liquid is not in contact with a rotor can be achieved by simple means.
