Heating device for the passenger compartment of motor vehicles with air-cooled engine, the exhaust gases of which are conducted through an exhaust gas/fluid heat exchanger. This exhaust gas/liquid heat exchanger is located in a circuit with a heating element which serves to heat the vehicle. Special measures are taken to avoid the heat having to be constantly conducted away at the heat exchanger when the heating is not switched on.
