The device for ventilating buildings comprises a housing which can be mounted on a horizontal or sloping roof surface of a building over a foul-air opening, bounds, with outer longitudinal and transverse walls, a foul-air shaft and is provided with fittings. These fittings pass through the foul-air shaft transversely to its longitudinal direction, impart a plurality of deviations to the flow of the foul-air and cover the foul-air opening in its entirety for weather protection thereof. To improve the efficiency, the fittings are grouped in this case into a plurality of layers, approximately parallel to one another and to the plane of the foul-air opening and arranged freely at a distance one above the other, and in each layer the fittings assigned to this layer define a number of passage openings for the foul-air, which are arranged in an approximately common plane at a distance next to one another. In the weather position of the device, the passage openings in the layers are in this case arranged so as to be offset, from one layer to another, relative to one another in the longitudinal direction of the foul-air shaft.
