The simultaneous use of a subscriber connection line for the transmission of telephony and data signals is made possible by transmitting the data signals with the aid of a carrier frequency outside the speech band. This prevents the subscriber from being engaged in the incoming direction during a data transmission, for example in the context of the videotex service.
