In an apparatus for cleaning sewers and cesspools, having a sludge-discharging tank (2) which can be evacuated and from which excess water can be withdrawn, the water undergoing cleaning with the aid of at least one dirt separator (16 or 17) and passing into a water tank (3) from which a clearing hose can be supplied with service water, long water-tank cleaning intervals and a simple construction of the dirt separator and separators (16 and 17 respectively) result if the dirt separator and dirt separators (16 and 17 respectively) is or are assigned at least one dirt-collecting trough (18, 25) which is connected to the sludge-discharging tank (2), which is capable of being evacuated, by means of a dirt return pipe (26 and 27 respectively) provided with a non-return valve (28) which closes when subjected to the pressure of the sludge-discharging tank (2). <IMAGE>
