A machine tool includes a tool changing device comprising a pair of independently slidable grippers 8, 9, slidable on a common movable carriage 13 that is movable between a horizontal spindle 2 and a vertical axis tool magazine 4. The carriage 13 is pivotally mounted to align it with the vertically arranged tools 6 in the magazine, and is movable perpendicularly in its respective positions in a plane parallel to the axis of the tool to remove or insert a tool from the spindle 2 or magazine 4. The independent grippers 8, 9 may be inclined to each other so that each can reach a tool at the spindle or magazine from a single position of the carriage 13, or the grippers may be independently moved along parallel paths and the carriage 13 is then provided with two positions of rest at the spindle and magazine zones. The grippers, and tool removal and replacement, are operated hydraulically; the carriage 13 is operated by a rack-and-pinion drive. The carriage 13 is mounted on a rail 14 which is movable on rollers fixed to a housing of a support 24. |
