Date Jan. 7, 1982.An indole of the formula <IMAGE> (III) +TR <IMAGE> (III') can be prepared by subjecting an aniline of the formula: <IMAGE> (I) and a glycol or an oxide of the formula: <IMAGE> to vapor phase reaction at 250 DEG to 400 DEG C. in the presence of a solid acid catalyst having dehydrating and dehydrogenating activities. (In the above-mentioned formulae, R1 stands for hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, R2 stands for alkyl or alkoxy, R3 and R4 are the same or different and stands for hydrogen or alkyl, R5 and R6 are the same or different and stand for hydrogen or alkyl, and n is an integer of 0 to 4.
