Iron complex with alkali-modified dextran treatment of anaemia

(A) Modified dextran contng. at least 1 terminal unit of formula (I) or (II), or a salt or lactone thereof. (B) A complex of the above, esp. with Fe(OH)3. The Fe complex is useful for treating iron-deficiency anaemia. Stable, conc. solns. can be obtd. with LD50 (mice, i.v.) > 2 g./kg. The modified dextran is prepd. from a partially depolymerised dextran of mean mol. wt. 500-50,000, pref. 1,000-10,000, by treatment with alkali at a pH is not 8 and at 40-80 deg. until no more alkali is consumed. The salt of the product is pptd. by a solvent and purified by means of an anion-exchange resin. The Fe3+ complex is prepd. by reactg. the dextran deriv. with colloidal Fe(OH)3 at 50-130 deg.
