[Also in Divisions C2, C3 and C5] Compounds of the general formula: in which X represents oxygen or sulphur; Y represents oxygen sulphur or the group -NR- in which R is hydrogen or alkyl; R 1 is hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl (optionally substituted by chlorine, alkyl or alkoxy), alkoxy or halogen; R 2 is hydrogen, alkyl, halogen or phenyl optionally substituted by alkyl or alkoxy; R 3 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, halogen or phenyl optionally substituted by chlorine or alkyl; R 4 is hydrogen, alkyl or halogen; and the phenyl nucleus A may be substituted by halogen or cyano, are used as optical brightening agents for organic materials. They may be used for brightening synthetic or natural fibres and fabrics e.g. (a) polyester fabric (Ex. 25), (b) nylon staple fabric (Ex. 27 and 28), (c) cotton fabric (Ex. 30) (d) triacetate-twill fabric (Ex. 31); (c) acetate-satin fabric (Ex. 32); (f) polypropylene fabric (Ex. 33) and (g) a polyester fabric (Ex. 34). |
