A container with a closing lid, which is preferably made of plastic material or the like, has a sealing flange 3 which runs around the opening of the container and has outwardly and downwardly bent edge parts, the edge part 12 of the lid being designed so as to surround the sealing flange 3 and having, on its outer, downwardly bent edge, an inner flange 15 which meets the underside of the lower edge of an edge flange 7 of the sealing flange. In this way, the lid is retained in its position on the container at the same time as the sealing surfaces on the sealing flange 3 and on a sealing part 11 on the lid are pressed against one another. An annular groove 9 is designed in the upper edge of the sealing flange 3, and two corresponding downwardly extending sealing tongues 18, 19 are formed inside the sealing part 11. These sealing tongues extend in a ring-shape inside the sealing part 11, and the spacing between the sealing tongues corresponds to the spacing between the side surfaces in the groove 9, so that the sealing tongues are pressed tightly against the side surfaces and the bottom part in the groove 9, by virtue of which reliable sealing between the lid and the container is brought about.
