PURPOSE:To obtain an EC display element having a long life and excellent coloring by forming a semiconductor layer having a specific property as an intermediate electrode layer beween an electrolyte and and electrode on the side in opposite contact therewith. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 12 consisting of In, Sn, O, an EC material layer 13 consisting of WO3, an electrolyte layer 14 formed by reactive vapor deposition of MgF2, an intermediate electrode consisting of Co3O4 and a trnasparent electrode 16 consisting of In, Sn, O are formed on a glass substrate 11. A semiconductor layer of a metallic oxide (e.g.,; the above-mentioned Co3O4) exhibiting the reactive characteristic of the type (p type) opposite to the type of the above-mentioned EC material layer (n type) 13 is formed as an intermediate electrode layer between the layer 14 and an electrode 16 on the side in opposite contact with said layer so that the ion on the side opposite to the ion reacting in the EC material layer is absorbed in said layer. The EC display element having a long life and excellent coloring is obtd. |
