A sampling station I is defined upstream of a station III for identifying successive samples of the material according to a predetermined sampling law. A serial number is allocated to each sample. At a given time t' the quantity of material having passed, since the passage of the head of the strip 2, in front of an evaluation station II placed downstream of the sampling station I is determined, as are, by means of an identification program and as a function of the preceding evaluation, laws of sampling and allocation of serial numbers and of the possible space-time difference between the passage of the material at the said time t' to the evaluation station II and its passage at another time t to the identification station III, the serial number i of the sample passing in front of the identification station III at the said time t. <IMAGE>
