To seal a ground formation which surrounds an underground working face and is under the pressure of ground water, a sealing medium which can swell up is mixed with compressed air fed to the working face. The sealing medium, advantageously bentonite, is fed with the compressed air into the ground fissures to be sealed. The fissures are sealed off by the volume of sealing medium increased by the swelling-up. Thus the compressed-air losses at the working face are largely avoided. No significant investment is required to carry out the method.
