Process for the preparation of 2-azetidinone compounds

There are prepared compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> in which R<1> denotes a substituted amino group or a substituted hydroxyl group and R<3> denotes an organic radical which carries a carboxyl group or an optionally substituted carboxamide group or a carboxylic acid ester group or a nitrile group. They are prepared by reaction of two compounds of the formulae: [CH2=N-R<3>]n and R<1'>-CH2-COOH or of a reactive derivative of the latter compound. In the compound obtained the protective group of the amino group, the hydroxyl group and/or the carboxyl group can be removed or an aralkenyl group in the 4-position can be oxidized to the 4-carboxaldehyde. The compounds have an antimicrobial activity; they can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases.
