PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound which is important as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, photosensitive materials, perfumes, and resins, without discoloration, in high quality and selectivity, by reacting resorcinol with acetic acid in the presence of zinc chloride at a relatively low temperature. CONSTITUTION:2,4-Dihydroxyacetophenone is prepared by reacting resorcinol with acetic in the presence of zinc chloride. The reaction is carried out by heating at 100-130 deg.C. The acetic acid, zinc chloride and resorcinol to be used in the reaction should be essentially anhydrous. It is industrially advantageous to use 1-2mol of acetic acid per 1mol of resorcinol, and to discard the unreacted acetic acid without recovery. |
