Method for manufacturing light wave guides comprising a plane support layer of a material having a relatively low refraction index, a plane layer for the propagation of the light waves, made of a material having a refraction index higher than that of the support layer and enclosed between two bands of a material having a refraction index lower than its own refraction index, and a plane layer for the confinement of light waves and made of a material having a refraction index lower than that of the propagation layer. At least one of the operations for depositing the plane layer for the propagation of light waves or for depositing the plane confinement layer is carried out by circulating into a pure silica tube vapors of a gas compound of silicon transformable into silica and a gas compound of a dopant transformable into the oxide of the latter, and by heating the vapors at a temperature sufficient to obtain a deposit of a doped silica layer having a refraction index different from that of pure silica. Concurrently, the diffusion or implantation of dopants, or their selective elimination may be used.
