An impact dowel having an expansion nail and an expansion sleeve (1) has an expansion region (7) with an oval cross-sectional area such that, while maintaining the original nominal diameter during the driving-in process of the expansion sleeve (1), there is still adequate deflection capability for drilling swarf remaining in the drilled hole, as a result of which premature driving of the expansion nail into the expansion sleeve (1) and expansion of the expansion region (7) as a result of compressed drilling swarf is prevented. <IMAGE>
