[Also in Division C7] Metal surfaces are degreased or derusted by contacting with an alkaline bath, with or without the passage of an electric current therethrough, containing a complex formed by reacting boric acid or an alkaline salt thereof with a water-soluble aliphatic polyhydroxy monocarboxylic acid, e.g. gluconic or glucoheptonic acids, having at least 4 carbon atoms and two vicinal hydroxyl groups, a lactone or an alkaline salt thereof. The bath may also contain a salt of a polyaminocarboxylic acid. The electrolytic treatment may be anodic or cathodic using a current density of 6A/dm.<SP>2</SP> A bath may contain (g./1.): NaOH 45, Na 2 CO 3 25, Na 3 P0 4 25, a dispersing agent which is an alkylphenyl polyethylene glycolether sulphate 0À8, and the borogluconate complex 5 to 25. The metal may be predegreased with trichloroethane. |
