Use of the surface-active amine oxides of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, R<2> represents hydrogen and/or C1-C2-alkyl, R<3> and R<4> independently of one another represent C1-C3-alkyl or (CH2-CH2O)m-H with m = 1-5 and n having values of 0-15, in the manufacture of pulp or paper having a low mechanical strength, high absorbency and softness.
