The invention relates to a process for the preparation of long-chain wax alcohols, in which a) linear alkanols of the formula CnH2n+1OH (I) are reacted with hydrogen bromide, or linear 1-alkanecarboxylic acids of the formula C2H2n+1COOH (II) in the presence of mercury(II) oxide are reacted with bromine, to give linear 1-bromoalkanes of the formula CnH2n+1Br (III), b) the resulting linear 1-bromoalkanes are reacted with triphenylphosphine to give the corresponding phosphonium salts of the formula (C6H5)3P CnH2n+1Br, c) the resulting phosphonium salts are converted into the ylides of the formula (C6H5)3P=CnH2n (V) in the presence of a strong base, d) the resulting ylides are reacted with omega -hydroxyalkanals of the formula HOCH2(CH2)mCHO (VI) to give linear alkenols of the formula H3C-(CH2)n 2-CH=CH-(CH2OH) (VII), and e) the resulting alkenols are hydrogenated catalytically under increased pressure and increased temperature to give the desired wax alcohols, where n is an integer from 17 to 21, m is an integer from 7 to 11, and the total of n + m is 28. )
