A suspension obtained by pressure digestion of crude dolomite and containing magnesium in the form of dissolved magnesium bicarbonate is centrifuged under pressure, the centrifuged product being let down to form a solid/liquid mixture, whose solid contains magnesium carbonate, this solid being separated off by centrifuging and then being subjected to a burning process to obtain magnesium oxide or sintered magnesite. For almost complete recovery of the magnesium fraction of the dolomite, the calcium carbonate-containing solid discharged from the centrifuge (4) is mixed with water saturated with carbon dioxide and this mixture is then centrifuged, the magnesium fraction of the centrifuged product being utilised in the same way. The use of centrifuges as continuous separation devices in this process leads, in addition to space saving, to a high throughput and to reduced equipment and instrumentation costs as compared with known processes. <IMAGE>
