When filling cartridges with white phosphorus, until now soiling of the outer cartridge wall has been unavoidable, and there were also considerable problems with waste water. The invention provides a remedy for this in the form of an apparatus for filling molten white phosphorus which is distinguished by a valve (20) for the inflowing phosphorus having a sealed seat (8) at the outlet, at least three supply or drainage lines (4, 5, 6) for water and/or gas and a sealing face (11) for a sealed termination with respect to the cartridge (Figure 1). By the process according to the invention, this apparatus is then used to heat the empty cartridge, which is exposed to the air, to a temperature above 44 DEG C, fill it with warm water, introduce a previously measured volume of the molten white phosphorus in such a way that the warm water displaced by the phosphorus does not get onto the outer wall of the cartridge, and finally remove the remaining water from the cartridge apart from a protective film on the phosphorus. <IMAGE>
