In remotely controllable devices for displaying interchangeable information characters using illuminated elements, in particular for displaying digits for price display boards at petrol stations, problems arise during night operation since the internal illumination produces shadows on the base area caused by the device components within a casing. It is, however, desirable during operation to prevent the occurrence of discernible differences between information characters on their bases at the changeover from day to night operation. Shadow formations due to switching and drive devices and also due to casing components are therefore to be prevented. Furthermore, the selected colours of the digits and the base area are to produce no discernible differences. The afore-mentioned disadvantages are avoided by means of a roll band made of transparent or translucent material as a character bearer. The ends of the roll band are attached to two rollers onto which they can be wound, which are set apart from one another and which can be driven alternately. There is no requirement for a number of switching and setting elements disposed behind the base area whose positions are necessarily associated with interfering shadow images.
