In a button sewing machine an attachment is provided which applies an expansible shanking collar between the button and the fabric and comprises two upstanding fingers 142, 154 which are together as in Fig. 6 to receive the shanking collar 254 and are moved apart to allow the button to be sewn to the fabric through the shanking collar. As shown in Fig. 10 the fingers 142, 154 act as a support for the button and stretch the shanking collar to allow the needle 46 to pass therethrough to sew the button place. When the fingers are removed the collar 254 returns to grip the threads 264. One finger 142 is fixed and the other 154 is moved by an electromagnet axially of the rod 150 under push button control. The whole collar expanding attachment is pivotally mounted on the sewing machine base. |
