1,171,618. Pneumatic actuators. NORBRO ENG. Ltd. Feb. 20,1967 [March 5, 1966; Feb. 2, 1967], Nos. 9733/66 and 5052/67. Heading F1P. In a pneumatically operated rotary actuator comprising a toothed output member rotatable by a pair of racks meshing therewith and forming part of the oppositely acting pistons 153, 154, slidable in a cylinder 150, the pistons are also slidable along axially extending tubular guides 151, 152 passing through holes therein provided with bearing bushes. End caps 155, 156 close the ends of the cylinder and are held in position by the guides 151, 152 being screwed thereinto or bolted thereto. Compressed air for actuating the pistons is supplied through one or other of the guides while exhaust takes place through the other. The supply and exhaust is controlled by a solenoid operated spool valve 167 in the end cap 155. In an alternative, Fig. 7 (not shown) an external valve controls the supply. In a second alternative Fig. 2 (not shown), one end of each tubular guide is fed with compressed air and a rod (52) within each tube is moved by external means at the opposite end into a position wherein it prevents or permits the ingress of the air. The external means may be electrical, e. g. solenoid, mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic devices. The inward movement of the pistons may be caused by helical springs disposed in recesses in the end caps of the actuators. A rod movable with one of the pistons and extending through one of the end caps may be arranged to operate micro-switches controlling the operation of visual or audible piston position indicating devices. |
