<p>In a cable-following apparatus 200 for replacing an underground cable 227, a telescopic main body 202, 226, 230 is disposed around the cable 227 and front and rear cable gripping mechanisms 240, 242 which alternately grip the cable so as to cause the body to slide forward along the cable. The cable following apparatus also includes an arrangement for releasing both of the gripping mechanisms 240, 242 from the cable at the same time in order to allow the entire apparatus 200 to be pulled rearwardly. The arrangement may consist of a rope 300 extending rearwardly and secured to a rear inner tube 230 so that the rear gripping mechanism 242 can be held disengaged from the cable. At the same time the front gripping mechanism 240 is moved into its disengaged position by the hydraulic cylinder arrangement 256 which otherwise provides alternate gripping of the mechanisms 240 and 242 and step-wise forward movement of the apparatus 200 as in GB 2103888A. <IMAGE></p> |
