PURPOSE:To increase mechanical strength such as bending strength and decrease contact resistance of gas to increase power generating efficiency by installing a plurality of hollow holes in the center of a porous carbon electrode substrate for a fuel cell. CONSTITUTION:An electrode substrate 1 is composed of a homogeneous porous carbon having a mean bulk density of 0.3-1.0g/cm<3>, preferably 0.4-0.8g/cm<3> and a gas permeability of 20ml/cm.hr.omega Aq or more. The electrode substrate 1 has a group of hollow holes 7 in its center and the hollow holes 7 have round or other shaped cross sections and are parallel each other and to the electrode surface of the substrate 1. Since both surfaces of the hollow hole are plane, this electrode substrate has large section modulus and increased bending strength. Since hollow holes which let gas (O2 or H2) through locate in the center of the substrate, it has increased bending strength, and is able to be made thin and has the advantages of thinned diffusion layer, decreased gas diffusion resistance, and increased current density. |
