PURPOSE:To avoid the formation of by-products and prepare efficiently and selectively itaconic acid, by bringing an immobilized microorganism having the ability to produce the itaconic acid into contact with a saccharide solution. CONSTITUTION:A microbial cell or spore of a microorganism, e.g. Aspergillus terreus or Aspergillus itaconicus, having the ability to produce itaconic acid, is immobilized with a gel of a base material, e.g. polyacrylamide, kappa-karrageenan or alginic acid and then molded into a spherical or block shape. The resultant molded material (immobilized microorganism) is brought into contact with a saccharide solution containing glucose, fructose or sucrose, in a through flow cylindrical reactor while passing air or oxygen therethrough to prepare the aimed itaconic acid. Collagen, cellulose succinate, etc. in addition to those described above may be used as the base material for gelation. |
