PURPOSE:To obtain a fully solid state type electrochromic (EC) element having a high coloring density and response speed by providing successively an EC layer consisting of several kinds of EC material layers, an insulation layer which is a dielectric film, an EC layer and a transparent cathode on a transparent anode. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 2 is formed on a transparent substrate 1 of glass or the like, and an EC layer 6 laminated with plural thin EC material layers like, for example, an Ir(OH)2 layer 6a and a Cr2O3 layer 6b is formed on the electrode 2. An insulation layer 4 is formed of a dielectric such as Ta2O5 on the layer 6, and an EC layer 3 is formed of WO3, etc. thereon, whereafter a transparent electrode or semitransparent electrode (Au film) to be used as a cathode 5 is formed thereon. The fully solid state type EC element having a higher coloring density and response speed than an EC element formed with one EC layer is thus obtd. |
