The invention relates to a device for the automated cutting of a peripheral groove in a spectacle lens 17. The device comprises a unit 16,18,9,10,11,19 for fixing and turning the lens, a unit 21-24,40 for driving the lens-cutting organ, a unit 2,3,28,29 for adjusting the position of the lens, a unit 9 for regulating the speed of rotation of the lens, a unit 33 for adjusting the lens- cutting pressure, and a unit 31,32 that reacts to abnormal operating situations and disconnects the power when they arise. The device can cut a peripheral groove with a uniform depth and a uniform width in a predetermined position on various lenses, irrespective of their shape or contours, without having to rely on the operator's skill and experience.
